My introduction to John was that first performance of Gentle On My Mind on the Smothers Brothers show. I was 16 or 17, playing guitar, captivated by the likes of Dylan, Baez, Ochs. Gentle On My Mind was the final push in the right direction, the sudden clarity of knowing what kind of music really moved me, what kind of music I wanted to play.
I saw John perform many times over the years. In the past few years, since I have been living in northeastern Pennsylvania, I managed to catch all of his performances at Godfey Daniels Coffeehouse in Bethlehem, a nice, informal setting. John was always friendly, always willing to talk with anyone, never full of himself.
I know my life was enriched by John and his music. I am grateful for the time he was with us.
