Pete, my wife, and I had to con our way onto the boat by claiming to be on the unexpected guest list. I had loved John since the Other Brothers Smothers Show, and it was my first chance to see him live. During the talk show part of the show, Faron Young joked about John being able to play anything, especially if it was under 21. I continued to catch any performance by the great man that I could, including bookstore autograph sessions, a great double bill with John and a full band at the Station Inn with John Prine, an intimate show in the rain at a County Fair with an audience of five people, and the last time--in a 120 year old opera house in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The Eureka show was John backed by a guitar and a stand-up bass. The audience was the most quiet and respectful audience (during the songs) that I had ever been a part of. I'll never forget the haunting In Tall Buildings from that night. We all knew that we'd been graced with a magical evening. Thank you for all of it, fiddle man.
