I must have seen John perform 30 or 40 times. Gentle on my mind (by him, not by anybody else) is my favorite tune. The most intense performance of the song was last year at the Retrograss concert. He did it pizzicato on the fiddle, with David Grisman on mandolin, and Mike Seegr on banjo. Moving!!! During intermission, he didn't shake hands or sign autographs, but he sat n the edge of the stage, and talked to everyone. I told him that was the best Gentle I'd ever heard him do. He thanked me, winked and gave that goofy grin. He was a great one!
