John was a semi-regular for years at the Philadelphia Folk Festival, and returned last year after a long-absence (ironically, to pinch-hit for the ailing Utah Phillips). His deadpan humor, his encyclopediac knowledge of folk, country and bluegrass music, and his beautiful songs and playing made it a pleasure to be in his musical company. He will be deeply missed.
