Years ago, in a used record store I stumbled on a mint copy of John Hartford’s “Headin’ Down into the Mystery Below”. John’s wonderful mellow pulsing banjo rythms set me off on a banjo learning curve that continues to this day, and a quest to aquire as many of his other great albums as could be found.
From our home in far off New Zealand, Joan and I booked a trip which included a concert with John in Philadelphia. Imagine our expectancy on arriving at the “Tin Angel” and our bitter disappointment on being told that the show had been cancelled due to a mess up with Winterhawk bookings. So we bought “Live at College Station” and hoped for another chance to meet John. Sadly this will never happen. From “Goodbye Waltz” (No End of Love) :-
“See that boat go down the sky
Till the shades of night are drawing nigh
And the wind dies out in the western sky - Goodbye.
