My sincerest sympathy and condolences to all of John's family and friends. I feel so ashamed, he brought so much fascination and enjoyment into my life and I didn't even know he was ill.
Music is one of the greatest pleasures in my life and I've listened to it all from Bach to Beethoven, Bernstein the Beetles,Bono and Bela, but to me the musician I admired/idolized most, the person who stood the tallest in my mind as the most incredibly talented yet most humble was John. Every single time I listened to any one of his songs I found myself awestruck: the lyrics, the music, the musicianship, the voice - so overwhelmingly talented.
One night in a small coffe shop/general store in NY John played "My Rag". The cords he played and sang were different from those on the record. When I said "John you changed the cords to My Rag?" he was too polite to simply say "no, you don't understand music, I just played it in a different key" instead he humored me and said he didn't think he changed them - but maybe.
I will miss him greatly.
